• Topical insecticide (permethrins or macrocyclic lactones) every 2 weeks for 2 or 3 treatments will treat and prevent lice infestation if bedding, grooming equipment and other fomites are cleaned as well.
  • Diazinon, pyrethroids, carbaryl or tetrachlorvinos might be indicated for other ectoparasite disorders. Dermatophilosis responds to parenteral penicillin or tetracycline. Corticosteroid agents (dexamethasone, methylprednisolone) are indicated for immune-mediated or hypersensitivity disorders.
  • Coccidioidomycosis (systemic) has been treated with fluconazole (2.27 mg/kg, PO). For topical infection, agents such as nystatin or thiabendazole may be useful.
  • Dermatophilosis responds to ceftiofur, penicillin, or oxytetracycline given for a minimum of 5–7 days. Topical cleaning of crusts with disinfectants such as dilute chlorhexidine (25 mL per liter of saline) can also be performed.
